How to get driver licence in QLD

To get your driver’s licence in QLD, you need to go through three or four main stages depending on your age:

under 25:

getting your learner licence > getting your provisional 1 licence > getting your provisional 2 licence > getting your full licence

25 and above:

getting your learner licence > getting your provisional 2 licence > getting your full licence

Learner licence

What are the prerequisites?

  • Minimum Age:16
  • Must be a Queensland resident
  • Must complete a Driver Licence Application/Renewal form

What test/s do I have to take?

  • Road Rules Test
  • An eyesight test

What’s on the test?

  • Section 1: 20 general road rules questions
  • Section 2: 10 ‘right of way’ questions

What do I need to score to pass?

  • Section 1: at least 18 correct answers
  • Section 2: at least 9 correct answers

What study materials do I need?

  • The Learner Driver Handbook, available online.

Where do I take the test?

You don’t need to book ahead, just visit a Queensland Transport customer service centre, or a police station or QGAP office if you live in a rural area.

What do I bring to the test?

  • Evidence of identity and residence
  • Means to pay for the test and licence fee

I’ve completed the requirements, now how do I get my learner licence?

Your learner licence will be issued to you on the spot when you successfully complete the required tests and pay the licence fee

What does having a learner licence mean?

  • You are now permitted to drive a car under supervision. Your supervisor must be someone with a full Australian driver’s licence
  • You must adhere to the special rules for learner drivers

What are the special rules for learner drivers?

  • Must clearly display L plates on front and rear of the vehicle’s exterior
  • Must be supervised at all times by a person with a full Australian driver’s licence
  • Drivers under 25 must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.00%
  • Drivers 25 and over must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.05%
  • Cannot use a mobile phone (including hands-free devices)
  • Must carry learner licence when driving

What happens next?

If you are under 25, the next step is to get your P1 licence. To get your P1 licence, you must:
Have held your learner licence for a minimum of 12 months
Have completed 100 hours of supervised driving practice (including 10 hours at night), which must be recorded in the Learner Driver Logbook. Before you can apply for your P1 licence, your Logbook must be assessed and passed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads

If you are over 25, you can apply directly for the P2 licence after 12 months on your learner licence.

P1 (under 25)

What are the prerequisites?

  • Minimum Age:17
  • Must have held a QLD learner licence for a minimum of 12 months
  • Must have completed 100 hours of supervised driving practice (including 10 hours at night), recorded in the Learner Driver Logbook
  • Completed Logbook must be assessed and passed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Logbooks must be lodged at an Australia Post outlet at least 14 days prior to your Q-SAFE Driving Test appointment
  • Must complete a Driver Licence Application/Renewal Form

What test/s do I have to take?

  • Q-SAFE Practical Driving Test
  • An eyesight test

A driving examiner will evaluate your ability to drive safely and correctly in different driving situations which may include a variety of speed zones.

I’ve completed the requirements, now how do I get my P1 licence?

Your P1 licence will be issued to you on the spot when you successfully complete the required tests and pay the licence fee.

What does having a P1 licence mean?

  • You are now permitted to drive a car without supervision
  • You must adhere to the special rules for learner drivers

What are the special rules for P1 drivers?

  • Must clearly display red P plates on front and rear of the vehicle’s exterior
  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.00%
  • Cannot carry more than one passenger under 21 between 11pm and 5am
  • Cannot teach a learner driver
  • Must not drive certain vehicles, including those with eight or more cylinders, and turbo or super-charged engine that is not diesel powered

What happens next?

Once you have held your P1 licence for 10.5 months, you are eligible to sit the Hazard Perception Test (HPT). When you pass the HPT and have held your P1 licence for at least 12 months, you can apply for a P2 licence.

P2 (under 25)

What are the prerequisites?

  • Minimum Age:18
  • Must have held a QLD P1 licence for a minimum of 12 months
  • Must complete a Driver Licence Application/Renewal form

What test/s do I have to take?

Hazard Perception Test (HPT)

What’s on the test?

The HPT consists of a series of video clips, each presenting a traffic conflict situation from the driver’s point of view. You are assessed on your ability to identify and respond to potential dangers on the road

The test must be taken online

How do I pay for the test?

  • Online (by credit card)
  • By phone on 13 23 90 (by credit card)
  • In person at a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre when you apply for your P2 licence (pay by cash, credit card, eftpos or cheque)

Where do I take the test?

The test is only available online. You will need a computer with broadband internet access, and Adobe Flash Player (version 9.0.115 or later).

I’ve completed the requirements, now how do I get my P2 licence?

  • Visit a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre
  • Complete and submit a Driver Licence Application/Renewal Form
  • Pay for the Hazard Perception Test (if you have not already paid online or over the phone)

What does having a P2 licence mean?

You must adhere to the special rules for P2 drivers

What are the special rules for P2 drivers?

  • Must clearly display green P plates on front and rear of the vehicle’s exterior
  • Must not exceed a blood alcohol level of 0.00%
  • Cannot teach a learner driver
  • Must not drive certain vehicles, including those with eight or more cylinders, and turbo or super-charged engine that is not diesel powered
  • Must not accumulate more than four demerit points in one year

What happens next?

Once you have held your P2 licence for at least two years, you can progress to a full licence.

P2(25+)

  • If you were 25 or older when you received your P2 licence, you must have held the P2 for at least one year.

Visit a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre and bring:

  • Your P2 licence
  • Means to pay the licence fee
  • Evidence of identity and residence

What does having a full licence mean?

Now that you are a little more experienced, you no longer have to adhere to the special rules that apply to provisional drivers, but you do need to abide by the general rules and restrictions that apply to all QLD drivers.
